DJ Khaled has ascended to superstardom on the strength of his megawatt social media presence. But now, he can add the ever-elusive number one album to his list of achievements. His latest release, Major Key, is currently the number one album in the country. And despite landing in the pole position, this is actually his second best sales week. His biggest seller is 2007’s We The Best.
The top-charting new release marks what’s been a banner year for Khaled. His Snapchat following continues to be the gold standard for how to effectively use the social media app. It’s there that he solidified his popular catchphrase, “major key”. It’s this same influence that’s landed him endorsement deals with Silk, Dussê, and Ciroc Vodka. He also toured as the opening act for the US leg of Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour.
Khaled’s album features a slew of A-list guest appearances from hip hop royalty like Jay-Z, Future, Nas, Drake, Gucci Mane, and Nicki Minaj just to name a few. He’s known for his rousing street anthems and posse cuts. And despite his newfound fame, he’s stuck to the formula on Major Key.
In a sense, his albums resemble his Snapchat account. It’s never just about him. Everyone is invited to the party. And in 2016, it looks like millions of people have decided to formally accept the invite.
