Not since Kendrick Lamar have we seen the world of hip hop go nuts over new talent. With the ubiquitous hit ‘Panda’, 18-year-old rapper Desiigner has scored a number one hit and parlayed the success into a deal with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music. But his debut mixtape ‘New English’ failed to live up to the hype and was widely panned by critics. Now, he hopes to resume his meteoric career growth with his latest banger, ‘Timmy Turner’.
‘Panda’ was a hit for so many reasons. Listeners were captivated by his uncanny vocal resemblance to reigning trap king Future. The song’s addictive repetition, hyper background ad-libs and yelps, and nearly indistinguishable lyrics made for an adventurous listen. It seemed Desiigner had taken Future’s winning formula and flipped it inside out. In the process, he’d achieved the kind of success that even Future would envy.
Then, ‘New English’ dropped shortly after his energy-filled performance at the BET Awards in late June. The surprise release popped up as a TIDAL exclusive with little promotion. Critics were mostly disappointed. There wasn’t a single song as captivating as ‘Panda’. And the energy of Desiigner’s live performances hadn’t translated to a full-length offering. But shortly after, the young rapper used viral video to his advantage to drum up more anticipation.
XXL magazine’s Freshman 2016 Freestyle video featured Desiigner, Anderson.Paak, and Little Dicky sparring over the same beat. All three were impressive, but it was Desiigner’s catchy, repetitive, nonsensical lyrics about a Fairly Odd Parents character that stole the show. Fans went crazy and waited impatiently for a full song.
Earlier this month, they were blessed with a complete track. And based on critical response, it looks like Desiigner has just saved himself from becoming a tragic one-hit wonder.
